Southwest Airlines announces nonstop flights from Pittsburgh to LA

Southwest Airlines plans to announce today that it will launch daily nonstop service to Los Angeles International Airport from Pittsburgh on Aug. 16.

It will give local travelers another much-needed option to get to the City of Angels. The only carrier that now flies nonstop to LA is American Airlines, with a 6 a.m. daily flight that is scaled back to four times a week in the winter.

“The greater Pittsburgh region holds a unique place in Southwest’s network playbook. Pittsburgh customers have been asking for West Coast service and with this daily nonstop service to Los Angeles International Airport, we’re delivering,” said Dave Doty, Southwest senior manager, network planning.

The Los Angeles flight will be the airline’s first to the West Coast from Pittsburgh. It will be Southwest’s 16th destination from the airport, counting a St. Louis flight set to start March 10 and seasonal service to Palm Beach, Fla. That’s the most of any airline.

With the new flight, Southwest will have up to 30 daily nonstops from the Findlay airport.

One who has lobbied hard for additional LA service is Dawn Keezer, director of the Pittsburgh Film Office.

She said the number one complaint she gets from film industry clients is the lack of nonstop flights to and from Los Angeles.

“We’re beyond excited,” she said of the new flight.

“This will help ensure the continued growth of the film industry in southwestern Pennsylvania, as it shows that our region is serious about listening to our clients’ needs and the airport has delivered what was requested. Now we hope that this route will be so successful that a third nonstop will be added as soon as possible.”

The LA flight would be the latest in a recent string of successes for Ms. Cassotis and the airport.

Last week, OneJet announced it would be adding service to Hartford, Conn., and four other cities this year and making Pittsburgh a focus city, bringing 40 jobs.

In January, Frontier Airlines, which has not flown from Pittsburgh since 2012, unveiled plans to fly to Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Orlando, Fla., starting in mid-June.

In all, the airport has added 21 new routes in the last 13 months.

Top 10 Cheap Flight Deals of 2016

It sounds so friendly: Scott's Cheap Flights List. Since 2010, Scott has flown 370,000 miles, visited 38 countries, and earned two million (yes, million) frequent flier miles. He's a junkie for a deal, the kind of guy who will check flights at 3 a.m. when his new puppy noses him awake for a bathroom break. Keyes spends hours looking for good value—doing "brute force searches" through Google Flights, the ITA Matrix, on Twitter and message boards—and thrills in the discounts he saves his friends and—now—some 7,000 subscribers and newfound admirers. "Some people are obsessed with interior design. Some love Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I love searching for cheap flights," he tells Traveler. "I get a big thrill in finding a really good deal."

We've had our eye on Scott's Cheap Flights List for a little while now, and though we also like to pride ourselves on finding great airfares, he consistently one-ups us. Many of his e-newsletters mention mistake fares that airlines accidentally release online. "I love mistake fares," he says. "That’s what started the whole list to begin with. The original New York-to-Milan flight was a mistake fare. Some airlines still run on old IT systems, and [partner and affiliate sites] tend to have a lot of complications—like, you can buy a United flight on Lufthansa.com, so there's potential for error. Airlines will sell a flight for far cheaper than they intend to," and the mistake lingers for about 12–24 hours.

What's the best day to buy airline tickets?

Some say Tuesday is the day to buy airline tickets, others say weekends yield the best deals, but the trick may be in the way you buy, not the time.

Is there a best day to get the lowest price on a flight?

Many travelers think the magic day is Tuesday, long lauded by travel deal sites and various publications for its fare sales. Other travelers may have heard pundits declare Wednesday the ideal day.

In December, Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corp., which processes ticket transactions for airlines and travel agencies, announced that weekends are the new best time.

But is there really a preferred day to buy?

“I just want to drive a stake through the heart of that myth,” said George Hobica, the founder of the deal alert site airfarewatchdog.com, who has been looking at airfares on popular routes every day for more than 20 years, with the rare exception of a vacation where he doesn’t have Internet access.

There are too many variables at play for there to be a universally ideal day to buy an airline ticket. Price depends on a variety of factors, including the route; the level of competition on the route; surrounding holidays and events (such as a convention or the Super Bowl), and the days of the week you plan to fly.

All over the map

During a single week in March, for example, a recent search for a round-trip flight between New York and Miami turned up ticket prices as low as $174 and as high as $314. Besides, nowadays we have fare calendars at our fingertips and websites such as Kayak and Travelzoo that alert us to low fares and sales — and those sales don’t always take place on the same day of the week.

Airlines (and the above example is but one of many) are perpetually tweaking prices, making predictions difficult. Expedia said as much in its report. Even though its latest research asserts that weekends have the best fares, consumers who spot a good deal on Thursday shouldn’t wait until Saturday to buy it with the hope that the price will tumble even further.

“If you find a fare that looks like a good deal, grab it,” the report said, “regardless of the day of week.”

In addition to recommending the best times of the week to book, Expedia and other sites such as FareCompare publish suggestions about how far in advance of a trip to book to score the lowest fare. For instance, Expedia reported in December that the optimal time to buy an economy ticket for travel in North America is 57 days in advance, resulting in a potential savings of about 10 percent vs. the average fare. Recommended lead times for travel to international destinations, including Europe and Asia-Pacific, were even longer.

Exceptions abound

Travelers shouldn’t think of predictions as rules, though. There are flights to Asia, for example, that are $500 cheaper when booked at the last minute as opposed to months in advance, Hobica said.

And talking about the “average fare” isn’t necessarily helpful because that doesn’t take into account the quality of a flight. Is it nonstop, or does it have a 34-minute connection in a busy, sprawling airport such as Atlanta? Is it an 18-hour layover in Dallas that will require you to spend an additional $300 in hotel bills and meals? Are you flying in an aisle seat in a Dreamliner or in the middle seat in a MD-80? And if that cheap ticket you found is on a discount airline such as Spirit or Frontier, chances are you’ll have to budget another $30 to $100 to check a bag. In other words, you probably don’t want the average fare.

If you want to sit next to your companion, be a safe distance from the bathroom, put your bag in an overhead compartment instead of the belly of the plane and have enough time to make a connection, what you really want are good fares that may not be the absolute cheapest, but give you the experience you want.

Viable Options to Book Flight Tickets

Over the past few years, the aviation industry has been growing at a lightning pace. A lot of new low-cost carriers (LCC) have emerged in the last decade, leading to an addition of many new options for flyers. To book flight tickets for domestic travel, there is a wide array of airlines to choose from. Before the introduction of LCCs, the aviation market was dominated by full-service carriers. Because of this situation, a lot of people had to pay for the services they did not want to avail. Many LCCs give passengers the option of availing these services separately while reserving seats.

In addition to the drastic changes in the aviation industry, the development of mobile technology has made things even easier. Internet facilitates buying of air tickets on the web itself without any difficulty. To make reservations online, users need only an internet connection along with a credit or debit card for completing the transaction. There are a number of ways, in which a person can complete the process successfully. Online travel agencies (OTAs) and mobile applications are two of the easiest and most accessible modes, available for this purpose.

+1-844-666-4560

Online Travel Agencies

With online marketing gaining pace, almost all the airlines have collaborated with OTAs to attract a wider range of customers. These portals do away with the need of calling individual travel offices or visiting them personally. Such travel websites offer a number of available flights for a particular departure date and destination. To book flight tickets through online travel agencies, people can choose from a number of available websites. The best thing about reserving a seat on an aircraft through OTAs is the available flights can be compared in a single window. On the basis of the preference of customers, the most suitable option can be chosen.

Online travel agencies regularly offer deals and cheap fares for flight tickets during the year or as part of flash sales. Regular customers may get coupons and credits that can be availed later to make the flight cheaper in the long run. While users undergo the process on the internet, they have an option of buying either a one-way or a round trip ticket. A one-way ticket is a viable option for those, who are not yet sure about their return schedule, whereas a round trip prevents the hassle of last-minute booking.
